Promise: A Poem

when vitality is wanting
experience should be distilled
rich as honey
viscous and sweet
on the body’s tongue

life lingering —
before loss

for after arrives a brittle inertia
a thinness
that sleep cannot sate
and memory will not feed

alone, hollow
(even bitter)
we must patiently await
the return of a deep resonance
that promises
bees
